Form 990

There are other tax forms that apply to nonprofits, but these two are the most common. In most cases, Form 1023 only needs to be filed once to establish an organization as tax exempt, while your organization is required to complete Form 990 every year to maintain your 501(c)(3) status. IRS Form 990 is an informational tax form and the Form 990T is a tax return that most tax-exempt organizations file annually. The preparation and filing of the forms gives the IRS an overview of the university’s activities, governance and detailed financial information. Nonprofit Explorer has organizations claiming tax exemption in each of the 27 subsections of the 501(c) section of the tax code, and which have filed a Form 990, Form 990EZ or Form 990PF.

What is the difference between audited financials and 990?

The presentation in the Form 990 is more extensive than that shown in the audited financial statements and is complicated. The revenue and expenses are segregated in the revenue section of the Form 990, while the audited financial statements may show this information as a net number.

The 990 is the tax form the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requires all 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable and nonprofit organizations to submit annually. The forms are publicly accessible once they are processed, but note that there can be a month delay from the end of the organization’s fiscal year to the latest available online form. While there are a limited number of 501(c) organizations that are exempt from filing Form 990 on an annual basis (e.g., churches), the vast majority have a filing obligation. The type of Form 990 an exempt organization files depends on various factors, including size, public charity or private foundation status, and whether such organization is included in a group ruling. For organizations required to file the long-form version of Form 990, gathering all the necessary information can be quite time-consuming. If an organization is unable to complete its required forms by this year’s May 15th deadline, filing Form 8868 can extend the filing date for the 2022 Form 990 out to Wednesday, November 15, 2023.

This is because you’ll need to update your Form 990 with the details of the audit in the financial section of the tax form. For this reason, consider filing for an extension for your Form 990 to ensure you still get it in on time. This form isn’t designed to determine the taxes your nonprofit owes to the government, but simply acts as a report to ensure the organization is handling funds properly and isn’t fraudulent. So long as your organization is legitimate and operates with sound financial management strategies, you have nothing to worry about when filing your annual Form 990.
